I am on to Grotto page 12 and I need to finish up a background panel, however, my editor started asking for the outline of the Sword of Justice novel so I'm trying to focus on this and I'll work on the comic on the weekend.
I'm back to working on Grotto of Poppies again and I'm trying to get two more pages done, hopefully by Friday, then It's two pages of Tedieval and then back to working full time on the infamous outline.
I finished up one page and then found out that I only have 10 gigs of space left on my hard drive. With an average of 1 gig per page... I'm going to need a bigger boat.
Okay, I'm getting back to working on comics after the insanity.
What insanity you ask? That would be back when I asked my Dad's publisher if I could use the print rights to do a hard copy of his book. At that time he reverted all of the rights to me but didn't tell me that. As a result, the ebooks were unpublished. Which I found out a couple of weeks ago now. This lead to last week's mad formatting and converting files so that I could release them and finally on Friday the ebook was released almost everywhere.
I have four more pages left (two pages for each comic) and then I have to get back to working on the scripts. However, in addition to Tedieval and A Grotto of Poppies, I need to edit Isaac & Lee #12 and then comic book adaptations of The Search for the Unicorns and Railroad Rising.
While doing that I also need to get three pieces of artwork ready for an upcoming art show at the end of April.
Yesterday I set up the last page for Grotto. I also realised how far behind I am with Tedieval. So I'm going to finish off Grotto and then focus on finishing Tedieval. I'm going to keep updating here now so that I can maintain my focus.
Yesterday I realised why I was struggling with a page so much. It wasn't fun, it wasn't dynamic and it wasn't exciting. So I began reworking it and I've found the coolness.
Okay, I finished up Grotto over the weekend, along with finishing another page of Tedieval. I now am stoked to be able to finish Tedieval. My only issue right now? Is that there are two pages left and I have to recreate them from scratch. But if I keep going the way that I have been, I should be able to finish by the end of the month (hopefully sooner though)
I finished up the Tedieval page. It was a slog, just because of the way I was creating the page but now I just have two pages left and then I'm done that story. Which means that I can get back to working on scripts
(The previous post didn't post)
So this week, I managed to quickly sketch out a rough for what will be the last page of Tedieval. I did this when I was supposed to be working at my day job, but I really just needed to get it sketched out and it didn't take long to do. Now I just need to get the pencils done...which, if it's quiet on my dayjob again today, I will sit down and get a panel or two sketched out.
I finally finished The Tedieval page which means now I am back to working on scripts and editing novels.
I've announced a hiatus on both webcomics in order to finish scripts and to maintain my lead time while I throw a third webcomic into the mix (I'm working on finalizing the edits on Isaac & Lee).
All this while still working my day job at home.
My webcomics have announced their hiatuses (is that the plural?) and I'm almost ready to be able to get back into working on comics (I'm probably about a month out). Although I am dabbling in a few of them right now.
I was organizing my studio and found my notebook which had the pencils I had lost for the ending of Tedieval. Usually, when I rewrite things, they are better. But in this case, I think this is a stronger ending. So I'm going to announce The Alternate Ending to Tedieval and I'll be posting that before I start on the second story arch.
Ok, so my return to the forum comes at a timely moment. I just finished a half-cross country trip to visit my mom to check in with her to make sure that she is okay in dealing with the loss of my Grandma (her mother of 99 years) earlier this year. She's doing ok.
I'm back home for the week but I'm getting ready for Fan Expo next week where I will be flying out to Toronto. (It's like my cross-country relay race). I have the opportunity to share a table with a couple of other authors so I'm excited to finally be able to go in person (this has been delayed due to COVID).
I'm currently working on a book catalogue to take with me to the show as I know that I will be short on table space and will need to make the most of it.
Well I just got accepted to Rose City Comic Con! With the PanelOne Show in October (and add in Canadian Thanksgiving), it means I'll be travelling every 2-3 weeks until Mid October!
Whew!
This means I'm going to have to be super organized and very disciplined in order to get work done while I'm on the road.
I have two comics that I've been struggling to get done.
I was trying to get a new schedule set up so that I am going back and forth between, comics, publishing (which includes rewriting, editing, and creating the prepress files) my dad's novels, and working on my own novels (I want to get one novel ready to be sent off to an editor by the end of the year), but it's going to take some practise.
Good job on getting into the cons! That's a great achievement.
I went to TCAF this year (as an attendee) and it was great. So nice to be able to go to those again. Not sure if I'm going to get to Fan Expo in Toronto this year. The March convention in Toronto was great...very well-attended. I'm sure Fan Expo will have a really good turnout.
Thanks! Fan Expo was kind of a two-in-one sort of thing, where I was offered to share a table with an author who was with the same publisher as me/my Dad. So it was one of those things where it was not only an opportunity to table at Fan Expo, but an opportunity to reconnect with other authors.
Funny you should ask! I sold out of two of my dad's books and the sketch cards were a big hit (as always!) Because I was sharing a table with two other people, it was a bit cramped for the amount of work I had on hand.
But I did very well and my only regret was not being able to get out to a bunch of the bookstores to introduce myself and to drop off catalogs. But there is always next year!
Now to get ready for Rose City Comic con. The only event that I've ever tabled at where I won't be selling anything, instead, I'll be promoting my websites and online store.
Warning: Rambly, Thinking Out Loud Post
I have to come to terms with the fact that Isaac & Lee is a flop (this isn't me being down on myself, this is me being a realist). Also, I'm getting to a point where I want to/need to work on other projects. Like Tedieval.
There are fans who will still want Isaac & Lee, but I need to wrap it up. It's funny because I can pivot anywhere else in my comics and novel works but this seems to be my one weak point.
If I look at it from a business perspective, there are comics I have that are much easier to sell. I think maybe the best way to work things is to set it as a passion project and work on it as I have freetime. But I'd be happy just to finish the series the way it was supposed to end.
Okay. I'm still holding firm on the idea that some of my comics are going to have to take a back seat while I focus on new comic and novel projects.
However, Rosecity Comicon really made me feel good about continuing to work on comics. I just need to find a good balance where I am working on both comics and novels.
I'm going to try for the last quarter, with a split day. This is where I work for a bit on comics for part of the day and novels for the other part. On days when I am having a hard time focusing on novels I can change it to working on comics and vice versa.
At least, this is the plan.
Wow, it's been a bit since the last time I checked in. So far, the split work day has worked out as there has been slow progress on the projects that I am working on.
Right now, my main focus is Tedieval. At the moment I am doing a character sketch of one of the baddies that he comes across. So this week one of the items on my to do list simply says, "Goatman"
I am not just "drawing a goatman" I need to draw a goatman in the form of a stuffed animal. So this is my goal for the week. Goatman goals.
I was going to start posting in here again and then things got busy. They are possibly even more busy, but now I guess I'm back to working on comics?
I needed a break from working on my Dad's novels for a little bit this year and I needed to get to work on my own stuff as I try to strike a balance between the two.
I got into a virtual convention and I have less than a week to upload my store and create a short video (due on Monday).
After that, I have an art show to prep for which will be taking place on May 4th.
A month after that I will be flying out to Calgary for a one-day show for PanelOne on June 3rd.
So I have a bunch of work to do in a very short time....and I really love it. I think this will light the fire under my butt to get things finished.
I'm pretty sure that I am dropping out of the art show. I want to focus on getting comics done and the art show is going to take time away from that. Old me would have forced myself to get all of it done, but it would have been at a detriment. I really just want to get these two books off my plate because they've been sitting unfinished for far too long.
I'm going to start posting as I complete sections of the comic so that I can actually watch the progression.
Tuesday - p1-all layers complete.
