Quark is probably taking a wait-and-see approach, and if Adobe doesn't experience a major backlash over CC, they'll follow suit. Adobe isn't uniquely "evil" ... they're just the ahead of the curve in trying to switch to a software rental model. Microsoft, Google, Apple, AutoCAD, Corel, and every other developer out there would love to start billing by the month.
I really liked that piece. I have my own opinions of course, but I definitely thought that it would be informative for someone who wants to start out on the cheap.
Corel has since started a "billing by the month" option, but they're not closing the door on "buy once and done" yet. Microsoft, on the other hand, has since gone all-in on monthly-billing.
