i work out about 4 times a week. 2 for weight training, 2 for cardio. I was running about ten miles a week for about 4 years until last month, I jacked up my knee (I think while drawing). I have a bad habit of pretzeling my legs while drawing. That coupled with an extreme sprinting session left me in bad shape. No more running for me.
The walk from my apartment to the comics studio I work out of is about 20 minutes — and it's 1.3 miles. So I try to walk that as often as I can (especially since the bus is about 10 minutes, so I don't even save myself that much time if I bus it). Today I bused to the studio (I was running late), then walked back to my apartment, then walked to my studio again — so, 2.6 miles so far. Edit: I walked home from the studio at the end of the night as well, so my total was almost four miles of walking.
Unfortunately, it's not enough. My travel in January and February left my knees hurting, so i clearly need more exercise. I need to start doing something that involves stretching again, like yoga. Also, I used to do capoeira, and then fell out of practice — and let six years slip by. I really want to get back into it, but all the classes I'm aware of are way the hell across town, and I get around on the bus.
Two demanding workouts over the weekend left me a bit tired and stiff today, but I went for a light workout, since I will l miss tomorrow and possibly Wed. The gym was packed but I'm opportunistic, and the rowing machines were empty, so I got one and started with 20 minutes at a moderate pace. I did a bit of light stretching after, 40 push-ups, and 20ish reps for biceps and triceps with resistance. Got on an open elliptical after that, but got off after about two minutes. I was done.
Last year (April) the Doctor and I had "a talk". Specifically about the fact that I had been on blood pressure and cholesterol meds for a year and my weight was still climbing and my BP and Chol was still in the "too high" range. ...and I WAS exercising.
So, he put me on a "no grains" diet... veggies, fruit, milk, meat... all fine. But, no breads.
I thought I was going to go flat out bonkers, as that makes up 80% of my diet. I gave it 4 months, and my weight, and BP and Chol went down. Noticeably. By November, I'd gone from 270 down to 210. Which was really great. And frankly, I mentally and emotionally felt better than I had in years. Then came the holidays and I ate a bunch of grains, and got off the track.
Been back on the diet for a couple weeks now, and walking 5 miles at least 3-4 times a day.
Want to get under 200 by SDCC, and by the end of the year, get down to 180 (fighting weight)
I've been having oatmeal in the morning a lot, usually at Starbucks. I add the fruit and nuts, but no sugar. getting the good chlorestoral up and the blood sugar down are priorities. Exercise is great for many reasons, but diet is key and mine should be better.
Oatmeal plus a spoonful of Metamucil (i.e. psyllium fiber + a little sweet flavoring) is my standard breakfast. Not because of constipation, just as a good way to get fiber every day. I add honey, or applesauce, or low-fat granola for variety.
I'm so glad this thread took off! Sounds like everybody is doing good things, and most of us seem to know where we lack and what to improve - like myself for example! I definitely am not eating as well as I should, but better than I have, so that's positive. I had some pasta on Sunday night and Butter Chicken last night, so fails there, but I'm on to salads for lunch three days running and only healthy snacks during the day! I probably have too much coffee, tea and sugar, and plan to cut back on that, and I haven't been exercising to the extent I should, this week. With my new work schedule, I'll really have to work that in somehow... probably with my time off, I should bring my roller blades and scoot around town for a half hour/45 minutes - I'll start that Thursday. Tomorrow I'll do some riding, maybe more time and or distance, and will do my utmost to keep the eating regulated. I'll keep you posted!
Having a slow start to the day but taking the bike to the shop for a spring tune up asap, get back on and riding as often as i can. I tend to be skinny, at 5.11" heaviest i've gotten was 190, in my 30s twice, but been a bit over and out of shape most of the last 13 or so years. Got back in shape in the mid 00s but then doing therefore repent i put it back on. Recently i lost all of it thanks to a gut bug and a tumour being removed - down to 150, my average in my 20s - and holding now for 5 or so month, probably once i get back on the bike i expect to put on some muscle again and go up a little. Mostly i walk everywhere, when stairs are an option over elevators or escalators, i take the stairs - intense on the metro - and ideally get on my bike at least every other day!
Had an errand to run, so only 20 minutes of jog/walking, 5 minutes of swimming. The weather's so unusually nice here that the gym was a ghost town... but they have showers, and I sweat too damn much to go back to work after exercise without a shower.
@Jimmie_Robinson Can I get a Hell Yeah? That's my weapon of choice as well.
Although I opted out on it this AM - I'm enjoying some Quaker hot cereal that's already flavoured, so I didn't need any. And it's some sort of no sugar added thing, so presumably healthy. I'll have to drive to my interview this morning, but maybe I'll bike out and back to the caricature gig. Actually that's not a bad idea... I'll have to see if everything will fit in my bags.
I start the day with a minimal carb protein shake, I read somewhere protein for breakfast is better than cereal but I can't be bothered to make eggs nor can I afford steak as they suggest. A shake seemed a lazy simple option. I missed checking in the last few days, so I did Monday - heavy weights 5x5 (exhausted and sore afterwards) Tuesday - nothing (still recovering from Monday) Today - Boxing session in a couple of hours, more coffee needed to survive until then

So, yeah... this is a GOOD thread.
